Ingredient Spotlight: Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerhouse ingredient and the most abundant antioxidant in our skin. However, we do not have the ability to make it ourselves unlike other animals and plants. It shields and protects skin from external stressors such as pollution and UV by neutralising the production of free radicals, which are highly reactive molecules that damage structures in our skin such as collagen and elastin.

Vitamin C can also help your skin in many other ways:

  • Anti-ageing:  As well as protecting against the degradation of collagen, vitamin C helps to stimulate the production of collagen, which slows down as we age.  This collagen boost keeps skin strong, firm and lifted, all of which prevent the signs of ageing.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Hyperpigmentation is a skin concern that many of us battle with, especially those of us that are darker skinned and/or deal with acne as spots that tend to leave a darker mark as they heal. Vitamin C helps this issue by inhibiting the tyrosinase enzyme, which is responsible for melanin production. Use of vitamin C regularly will help to even out pigmentation that is already present and decrease the intensity of new instances.
  • Decreasing inflammation: Vitamin C is anti-inflammatory; it calms redness and improves skin texture, which is great for those of you dealing with acne.
  • SPF booster: Vitamin C is great at combating free radicals and UV damage is notorious for producing them. Integrating vitamin C into your morning routine in conjunction with a sunscreen makes a great free radical fighting combo.

Vitamin C is a great ingredient, but it is important to pay attention to the formulation of the product as pure vitamin C is unstable, making it tricky to work with. In our new product we use ascorbyl glucoside, which is natural vitamin C (ascorbic acid) that has been stabilised with glucose. When our new product is applied an enzyme present in the skin, α-glucosidase, acts to slowly release the vitamin C, gifting you with all the amazing benefits mentioned above. Kakadu plum extract is also present in our new product which is naturally rich in vitamin C.

Experience brighter, more even, protected skin with the use of vitamin C, found in our new moisturiser, C-Caf Cream.
