Dr Ewoma Ukeleghe Q&A

Why is Bakuchiol is THE ingredient of the moment?

Bakuchiol is the ingredient of the moment for a variety of reasons, but to put it simply, when used in skincare it has been shown to improve everything; from reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in just 12 weeks to protecting the skin from environmental stressors. This wonder ingredient can be found in BYBI's Bakuchiol Skin Restore. It's a super easy lightweight night cream, enriched with Shea Butter, Grapeseed Oil and Aloe Vera - which gives additional nourishing and soothing benefits for any skin type.

Bakuchiol is widely recognised as a “natural alternative” to Retinol. How do you think the two ingredients compare and why is Bakuchiol such a standout in its own right?

They are often compared because their benefits to the skin and mechanism are similar.  Unlike Retinol, studieshave shown that Bakuchiol does not have the same propensity to cause redness, irritation and sensitivity.

study from the National Library of Medicine showed that Retinol and Bakuchiol do not have close structural similarities, yet they exhibit a similar gene expression profile, especially on certain key anti-ageing genes and proteins found within the skin. In short, this means that Bakuchiol can be used as an anti-ageing ingredient.

What are some “under the radar” benefits of Bakuchiol that people might not know about? Are there any surprising skin concerns that is treats and/or prevents?

Many people don't realise that Bakuchiol is also a potent antioxidant. In simple terms, antioxidants 'mop-up' unstable particles on the skin, that cause premature ageing and inflammation. These unstable particles, also known as free radicals, are caused by environmental aggressors such as pollution. In other words, Bakuchiol acts in minimising the damage of environmental aggressors on the skin.

Other well-known antioxidants include Vitamin C and Ferulic Acid.

What are the skin benefits and how can you expect the skin to look once you use the product for XX amount of time?

As with all products you need to use them for long enough to see a real difference. I suggest using Bakuchiol Skin Restore for at least 6 weeks - though I'm pretty confident (based on the formulation and my own personal experience) that you'll see tangible results before then! The initial benefit you can expect to see is more hydrated dewy skin. This will then progress into an improvement in the skin's texture, firmness and improvement of fine lines.

What is it about the BYBI Bakuchiol Skin Restore that you think sets it aside as a product in the world of many other Bakuchiol products?

There are a few things that set the Bakuchiol Skin Restore apart. Firstly, the Bakuchiol is sustainably sourced; which has a direct impact on the quality and efficacy of the product. This formulation is vegan, cruelty-free and carbon-neutral, proving that efficacious products can be conscious too. Last but not least, the texture is super luxurious and is packed with nourishing ingredients.
